Representation analysis

Why is representation so important? Well, this is what gives the businesses a way of setting a mark. By including a variation of things like colors, different types of clothes, variation of genders and religion they can impact the audience in different and lasting ways.

Representation of the Axe commercial

From the Axe commercial we can clearly see from the beginning a women running, as the commercial continues we see that more and more women come in the video and they're running towards the same target. These women are all wearing different kinds of bikinis, some have the same colors. Towards the end of the video the audience can see that all these women are running towards a man spraying Axe. How can we represent this? Just from seeing how happy the man is to see all these women in bikinis run towards him shows that all he wanted by applying the spray was to gather more women, to have more attention. What the commercial teaches the man watching it is that if you put their Axe body spray on, they will get every and any women they desire. It gives the targeted man an idea of what they need by how happy the man in the commercial is. Now, from a women's point of view the commercial isn't as happy, form the beginning of the video we see all these women half naked, showing most of their body and in the wild. What this is trying to represent is that women want to do whatever it takes to be with a man that uses this kind of spray. Women aren't happy with this commercial because it's showing that they're only being seen for what they wear and their bodies. Besides, it gives an idea to the people watching that women are below men. It gives the idea to women of all ages that they might only be wanted by a man if they have good physical features and that they should fight for a man.

Representation of the H&M commercial

In the H&M commercial we can see all kinds of people. Since the beginning we can see all these different individuals showing off their clothes proudly, not caring about where they are or how they look like. In the video, the audio is telling the people watching to go be yourself, it doesn't matter who you are. We can see a variety of races, styles, colors, places and way more. In comparison with the other commercial, this one wants to target everyone, not just a gender in specific. The people watching this commercial can easily get inspired, which is a good outcome. The people can represent this in many ways. It can give the targeted audience courage to be whoever they want to be and to dress the way they like. It can give people a visual representation of how happy you can be whenever you are and dress how you want. The target audience here is everyone, from old to young, from skinny to fat. The creators of this commercial wanted to gather everyone and they used representation in the best way they could.

Genre Research

What would our lives be without some fantasy?

Fantasy is a platform of imagination, moments that won’t happen or places that don’t exist. These films or shows are focused on myths, or fiction versions of our world. A film of fantasy contains a plot that isn't part of the world we live in. The plots of fantasy films usually contain magic, unknown creatures, different plates, places that don't exist. The fantasy movies are extremely popular in our world, many want to escape their real lives and the fantasy films are a way of doing that. They're famous because the people like seeing different versions of the world, it gives the viewers a chance of connect to the film and create their own fantasy.

Content

Magic is used in the fantasy films to show knowledge about a world that the viewer doesn't know. The magic theme uses "supernatural forces" or powers. The magic element in fantasy films is used so that the viewers can create a feeling of hope or wonder that can give a sense of happiness to the audience. Many adults like these films because they remind them of their childhood and what it was like to have hope or imagination of something.

Example: In the Harry Potter films magic is used in their wand fights. Magic is being used for good here since Harry Potter is fighting Voldemort. The whole purpose of this fight is so that Harry can use his magic to win against Voldemort and be at peace.

Adventure is also very important in Fantasy films due to the fact that they can disconnect the viewers from their seats and take them into another place without moving. This element used in fantasy films can have the audience excited of what will happen next. When people go to see fantasy films and they contain adventure, the viewer gets entertained. There are different types of adventures, there can be new discoveries of places that don't exist in real life, there can be danger in overcoming a fear in the adventure. People watching these films want adventures of their own and since they sometimes can't have any, they connect to the films by imagining their own or relating to them.

Example: The Jumanji film is filled with adventure, the characters got stuck in a game and to get out of it they have to find a way to overcome the obstacles. There's creatures that they have to fight and places they have to go in order to get back to their lives. A whole adventure.

Another important element of fantasy films are myths. We have all grown up with myths and there's many of them. These are important for fantasy films because they are tales that gives us believes, some might believe in gods or supernatural beings through this. These myth sometimes explain deeper meanings of our experience. Without myths, fantasy wouldn't be as deep and eye catching as it is. A movie containing a myth is considered a fantasy cause myths are not always true, the audience pictures the myth however they want and that's why it's so important to fantasy films, because it gives the viewer freedom of imagination.

Example: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is an example of myth because it's based on Greek Mythology. Not everyone might believe it, but there's some people that are really interested in it. In the film, Percy Jackson has to prove himself because Zeus was saying he stole the lightning from him.

Production Techniques

In the Fantasy films, special effects are used to leave the people viewing the films wondering. The use of the angles is really important in these films because they can give the audience other points of view. In the fantasy films they use a variety of angles, this is so the viewers can see the complete scene and see how wonderful it is. Since it's all fantasy, the setting of the scene won't be something we see usually and getting a complete look on it creates curiousness in the audience and it entertains.

Color is also a very important production technique in the fantasy films. If the colors of these movies were to be the same as the ones in our daily lives, it would lose the feeling of fantasy, of something that's supposed to be outstanding. Depending on the film, the colors have to relate to the topic. Since colors can create emotions for us, they have to be related to the idea of the movie so we can develop a feeling from it. Fantasy movies mainly use more colors than others, they need to make it unrealistic so the use of many colors makes it a fantasy.

Example: In the film Alice in Wonderland they use angles to show the whole scene so the viewer can get a full view of the fantasy world. They also use a variety of colors in this film so that the scenes can be surreal.

Marketing

The fantasy genre targets all the ages. Due to the fact that most of the fantasy films are all about imagination and unrealistic worlds, all of the ages, kids and adults are targeted with these films. There's a variety of fantasy films in our world and some might be more for adults than for kids, it all depends on the story and the setting of the movie to know the specific target audience of these films. Fantasy can be animated or real life movies, there can be adventure and myths, so it all depends on the story of the film.

The most famous movies in the fantasy genre are the ones that are adventurous and extremely unrealistic. Depending on the posters or the trailers, the audience gains immediate attention towards the film that hasn't even came out yet. The colors they use in the posters and the parts of the scenes they include definitely catch the viewers attention.

Examples

The Lord of the Rings (2001) In this movie the character Bilbo has a ring that causes him to go invisible. There is a lot of importance in this ring and he doesn't know that. The ring that he possess has so much power and the character Sauron was looking for it. Bilbo decides to give the ring to Frodo, who happens to be his nephew. The story of this film is that Frodo goes on a journey so he can destroy the ring Bilbo gave him since it's a really powerful one. He wants to destroy it at the fires of Mount Doom. The forces of Saruman tries to sabotage their journey so he doesn't destroy the ring. The colors and angles this movie uses all gather up to create a feeling of an unknown world and mysteriousness.

Onward  (2020) In this movie there's a pair of bothers that bring back their dad for 24 hours. The characters never knew their dad completely so they decided to do a spell to bring him back for a little. There's a problem though, in the middle of the process, the spell is broken. They only got half of their dad back, during the movie they try to find a way of finishing the spell so they can have a whole dad. In the movie they used really bright colors that caught the viewers attention and story behind it has a really great meaning. They're in a world that is nothing like ours.
